> THERAPEUTIC INDICATION
Treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria including mixed form infections involving P. falciparum and the treatment of infections resistant to most other antimalarial drugs in adults and children over 15 kg.
Consideration should be given to the current recommendations for the appropriate use of antimalarial treatments.
> DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
Dosage
Adults and children weighing more than 35 kg:
The total dose should be given in 6 doses of 4 tablets (i.e. 24 tablets) spread over a total of 60 hours according to the following schedule:
First dose at the time of diagnosis: 4 tablets.
Then 5 doses of 4 tablets 8, 24, 36, 48 and 60 hours after the first dose.
Body weight from 25 kg to less than 35 kg:
First dose at diagnosis: 3 tablets
Then 5 doses of 3 tablets 8, 24, 36, 48 and 60 hours after the first dose.
Body weight 15 kg to less than 25 kg:
First dose at diagnosis: 2 tablets
Then 5 doses of 2 tablets 8, 24, 36, 48 and 60 hours after the first dose.
Mode of administration
Tablets for oral administration.
In order to improve the absorption of the active ingredients, Cofantrine should be taken with a meal or with a milk drink. Cofantrine may be used with water in case of food intolerance, but systemic exposure may be reduced. If vomiting occurs within one hour of dosing, a full dose should be re-administered.
For administration to young children and infants, the tablet(s) may be crushed.
